Hyper-Scale Data Center Construction Site, Replacing Non-Compliant Transformers

Hyper‑scale data center builds demand more than fast lead times … they require disciplined execution, clear communication, and partners who perform under pressure.

Background:

MEP fit-out contractor CPG supported a hyper‑scale data center build in Quincy, Washington.

CPG is an established North American independent power producer with approximately 10 gigawatts of owned generation capacity across dozens of facilities But in November 2023, they faced a critical power problem.

THE CHALLENGE

CPG received 10 transformers from a supplier that were manufactured in Mexico and failed to meet standard testing requirements. While frustrating in any job, in a hyper‑scale environment, equipment issues quickly threaten construction sequencing, commissioning schedules, and client confidence.

CPG needed a partner that could:

  • Respond immediately
  • Meet aggressive timelines
  • Provide complete visibility into the process
  • Deliver reliable, fully tested equipment

TRANSFORMERS NEEDED:

Quantity

Product

1

500 kVA VFI Padmount  (Vacuum Fault Interrupter)

9

3000 kVA Padmount

THE SOLUTION

PDM received the order in the final week of November 2023 and immediately prioritized the project. Engineering, production, and planning moved in parallel to support an accelerated timeline while maintaining strict quality standards.

PDM ADVANTAGE

Six weeks after the order was received, PDM scheduled factory testing. To ensure transparency and confidence, CPG sent two representatives to PDM’s facility for a factory walkthrough and witness testing.

During the visit:

  • Manufacturing processes were reviewed in detail
  • Quality controls were validated by the contractor’s inspector
  • Factory testing was completed successfully

THE RESULTS:

The immediate result was clear – compliant transformers delivered on time, tested, and ready to support commissioning

BONUS: But the most telling result came after the equipment was installed, and the immediate crisis resolved … CPG provided PDM with a formal letter of recommendation. This endorsement has since been shared with multiple customers and continues to support new business opportunities.

Critical power infrastructure doesn’t just support hyper‑scale growth – it determines whether that growth is achievable at all … and projects like this one serve as a reminder that partnerships matter.
